Family Planning and „MotherShelter“ in East-Sambia

The Kondwelani Rural Health Centre in the Eastern Province of Zambia is responsible for around 5,000 inhabitants in 26 villages. Due to the long distance of almost 20 kilometres, many women find it difficult to reach the health centre. For this reason, sporadic consultations on family planning issues have been held under trees in remote areas.

To improve this unfortunate situation, the Kondwelani Health Centre began the construction of a facility for ‘family planning and mother shelter’ in 2024. The Breuckmann Foundation has been supporting the construction and completion of this building since 2025. The target groups for the offered family planning services are girls under the age of 18 and mothers with at least one child. Mothers who wish to avoid further pregnancies also need preventive medical check-ups for their children. Both services are offered at the Mother Shelter, which increases the acceptance of the facility.

The Mother Shelter in Manchuela was opened and put into operation at the end of November 2025. This ensures that over 2,000 women and girls under the age of 18 have regular access to family planning services.

The chair of the neighbourhood health committee, Evans Phiri, coordinated the work together with the state health officer Daniwe Longwe from the Kondwelani Health Centre. The latter emphasises that the new Mother Shelter serves as a model for the entire Eastern Province of Zambia.
