As previously reported, we have to carry out our projects under increasingly challenging
conditions:
- Contrary to forecasts, inflation in Malawi is still running at around 30%.
- Following the failure of a large hydroelectric power station, strict electricity
restrictions have been in place in the project area since May this year. The electricity
is still cut off for several hours every day, with no end in sight.
- With the development of a new district of Karonga near the POS centre, the number
of people living in the immediate vicinity has risen sharply, making measures urgently
necessary to further increase security and privacy.
- The POS centre is being visited by an unexpectedly large number of women who have
been victims of sexual violence.
In order to take these developments into account, we have now begun the necessary
expansion of the POS centre. On the one hand, this work includes an energy expansion
through the installation of a 10 kW PV solar system and associated electricity storage
facility in order to become independent of local suppliers.
On the other hand, the site is being completely enclosed with an approx. 300 m long
wall, which will enable surveillance and access control of all facilities.
We have now received additional funding for our ongoing project from the German Federal
Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to carry out these two measures.
However, we have to bear 25% of these unexpected additional costs ourselves.
In a next step, opportunities will be created in the coming year to help women who
have been victims of sexual violence and are seeking protection and assistance, and
to provide them with at least temporary accommodation.
